Caleb's Birthday Party

This weekend we got to celebrate our friend Caleb's second birthday with him at his party. Last year, it was Ellie's first party she had ever attended, so Caleb's party will always be a little sentimental for me.

This year Caleb had a Cookie Monster party and had literally the tallest birthday cake I had ever seen. It tasted wonderfully and even had a layer of cookie in the middle. YUM. One of Ellie's and Caleb's friend's mom, Kenya, made it.

Since I forgot to take my camera in, Michelle took some pictures of Ellie and Caleb together. Happy 2nd birthday Caleb!!

Doesn't he have the most beautiful blue eyes??

Caleb got a really cool train/car table that all the kids LOVED to play with, including Ellie, who really prefers cars to dolls any time.

What I've Been Reading

Since Christmas, you'll remember I've been on a reading jag. I thought it would be fun to list some of the books I've read during the last month or so.

I re-started the Left Behind series that I read 11 years ago when they first came out. So far, I've read:
  • Left Behind
  • Tribulation Force
  • Nicholae
  • Soul Harvest
  • Apollyon

I've found these at McKay's Bookstore and haven't paid more than $.25 each for them in hardback. What a deal! I've been held up because I can't seem to catch Assassins there, which is the next book in the series. The series is MUCH more relevant this time around and I find myself making comparisons from their fictionalized story to our actual current events. If you haven't read them, try them. If you have, consider re-reading them.

I started reading someone new to me, Susan Isaacs and finished

  • After All These Years

I'm currently working on another one by her called:

  • Long Time No See

I've also completed:

Dating Big Bird, by Laura Zigman

Good Grief, by Lolly Winston (a must read, honestly!!)

and am currently also reading:

We Are All Welcome Here, by my all-time favorite writer, Elizabeth Berg

Alone, by another favorite, Lisa Gardner

I think one of the only good things I can chalk up to winter is that the shorter days mean longer nights and more time to read.

Giddy-Up Horsey!!

Unlike Mala, my kids don't have really cool, real horses to ride so they have to improvise. Here is my makeshift horsey, with a Dora blanket saddle, riding his sister through the kitchen. He even recorded me making "Neigh" noises to play while he rode her around. FUNNY!! And yes, her hair IS in her eyes because we were getting ready to go take a bath.

Pix

Clever, title, eh? Just a few sweet pix of Jelly Belly this afternoon. I think her red purse (on her head) looks a lot like the traditional Kyrgyz hat, the kalpak, see the photo below. Granted, she's cuter than the man, eh?? *smile*

I just love this sweet, sweet face. Edited a little in Photoshop to make a few "artistic" changes.

I love how "intent" she is when she investigates things:

And, here are a few "outtakes":

Everytime we take pictures of her at least ONE turns out like this:

Check out the lovely snot coming from her nose. YUK!
Why do you think you need a gas mask/respirator to shoot airsoft guns? Yeah, it's a rhetorical question. Boys.

Just Cutting Up, Mom!!

Anyone care to guess what this is.

Yesterday, Ellie came into my bedroom and I gasped out loud. You probably could have heard the gasp all the way across the country I was so stunned. Apparently she found a pair of scissors in my purse (yes, I carry them to clip coupons) and had sat down in her happy little chair while I went upstairs and CUT HER DRESS.

I'm so thankful she didn't get hurt and that it was only her dress and not her finger or hair or something worse. But, still .. it was such a cute little dress. *sigh* I've decided we have to install more childproof locks and hide the scissors better. I didn't have a clue she could even use scissors. Guess I do now.

Anyone ready to swim?

Apparently, Ellie is! I made a long-awaited trip to Once Upon a Child. I hadn't been there in forever because, honestly, Ellie didn't need anything and I didn't want to be tempted. Since I've discovered consignment sales, the store just isn't quite the draw for me. Every now and then, though I have to get a "fix" and stop in.

On this trip I managed to get two pair of sandals that look new for $1.50 a pair, a Hartstrings complete outfit that was being cleared out, so 50% off, at, get this ... $7.50. Skirt, shirt, and sweater!!

`
I found a beautiful silk Laura Ashley dress that is smocked with seed pearls, clearanced for $3.25. It's beautiful.

I also picked up a pair of Dora PJs for the girl who LOVES "doa, doa, doa" - aka Dora, Dora, Dora.

But the thing Ellie loved the most was the bathing suit with the built-in floaties. She begged this morning to put it on and wear it. I snapped a few pictures of her in it. She looks like the Pillsbury Dough Boy.

This is her pointing out "doadoadoa" -- it's always one word for her.

New word this week: "baselet" - aka, bracelet. Also, "pintsess", aka "Princess"

Random Pictures

Lately Josh has been into building projects. He wants to saw, paint, drill, build all the time. That's ok except that he's not much on the clean up aspect of it all and tends to use his dad's tools, my craft supplies and stuff and won't put them back or clean them up. While I'm all supportive of his creative endeavors, it becomes another chore for me to either clean up or "nag" about. I keep thinking that I'm helping him develop into the man he is going to become. *smile* Imagine, however, looking up from work one day to see this:

The second photo is the "workshop" he built out on the deck on Monday so he would have a place "to work". I think it was because his room and the office were such a mess. One day I'm going to miss this, right?

He also got a "wild hair" to help Kevin dress Ellie this past Sunday. It was so funny to watch I grabbed the closest camera to get some pictures. They aren't the best, but the capture the essence of the large group effort it takes to get Ellie ready for church on Sundays. And people wonder why we had to stop going to early church...

After getting all dressed, she was enamoured with her "hat" and kept patting her head and saying, "Hat". She wore it pretty much all the day. This is amazing to me because she'll pull a bow out of her hair in two seconds flat, but left a HAT on??? Go figure. Here she is laying on the table (yes, the table) drawing. After she got ready, this is what she wanted to do and it kept her from getting dirty until we left.

She became quite frustrated with the umbrella however, and finally had to give it to Daddy to fix.

such a mess

Paging Mama, Where are you Mama???

Apparently I went MIA and didn't realize it until I got a lovely email from my friend Lynette today asking if I am ok because I haven't been posting to the blog. *oops* How does time slip by so quickly. I was STUNNED to see it has been 11 days now since my last post. I'll wait while you all have your collective gasps. *smile*

I'd like to say I have something monumental to show of my time since I've slack off on blogging. But, alas, no. I've been reading more -- it's a winter thing for me, somehow. I had not been able to read for a long time after Ellie came home (time, people, time!!) and so I hit a blue streak around Christmas and I think I've read eight or nine books. That took a little time from blogging.

Then, I've been trying to keep my work more current. Honestly, work has been such a struggle since Ellie came home and I think it's because I never had a real steady daycare schedule and so DeeAnna and I worked out a schedule that works so much better for me. Ellie goes to DeeAnna's house Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from oh 8 or 9 (depending on what I have to do work-wise that day) and I meet DeeAnna to pick her up right as school is getting out. Having four days to get work done and to do the paperwork has made my life ever so much better too. I don't have to try to work when she's home now and it's much less stressful AND my work is getting done on time so I'm not losing bonuses. Win-win.

Josh continues to play basketball, but honestly, that's not a drain on my time -- a few hours on Saturdays is pretty much it. He seems to have slimmed up quite a bit since the season started as his jeans are falling down on him now (pants on the ground, pants on the ground -- if you don't watch American Idol you have NO clue what I'm talking about; if you do, it's funny!). He wants to try out for middle school baseball and rec baseball sign ups start in February. THAT will be a big drain on my time.

Ellie ... ahhhhh Ellie. Now there's where a lot of my time goes. I'm certainly NOT complaining about it, because Lord knows I love her to pieces. That girl, however, can take a room apart in three seconds flat if she's in the mood. We joke that three armies couldn't put things back as quickly as she gets them out. But, there's also the times when she'll lay on the floor or sit in her chair for a half an hour and not make a peep. She has certainly blossomed into a "two" lately. I can tell her birthday is quickly coming up on us because almost every day we have an emotional meltdown from her. There is never a good reason that we can fathom, and often it will last for quite a while and then she's just done. Usually it involves large crocodile tears, some throwing of her body onto the ground and a few good shouts at whoever is nearby. Since it happens a lot in the afternoon, I suspect she is just tired and finds it sometimes hard to acclimate from one environment where its her and Addie to another environment where it's a bunch of loud tweens. Poor girl!!

Her speech has rapidly blossomed. Almost all the signs she knows she can now say the words to. I counted the other day (quickly) and think that she is between 25-30 words now. Considering most of this has come in the last few weeks, I think she is "getting it" finally. Granted, I continue to remind myself that she was a couple months premature, so developmentally, she is twenty-months, not twenty-two. Her favorite "game" to play is the "MAMA" game where she says, "MAMA" (think loud), and I say, "Yes?" and she says, "MAMA" and I say, "What?" and she says "MAMA" and I say, "What Ellie?" and she says "MAMA" and it goes on and on and on until she is finally satisfied and quits. It's the sweetest sound in the world. MAMA.

She hit a huge growth spurt of some sort. I haven't weighed her or measured her, but we pretty much can't wear any of the 12 month clothes any more -- she's too tall. Tall, you say?? Yes, too tall. Keep in mind, though, we ARE talking about 12 month clothes on a 22 month old toddler, so moving up and into the 18 month clothes is not a bad thing. Today I spent several hours taking clothes out of her closet and putting them into tubs for consignment. She was at the point where it didn't seem like she had any clothes to wear (IMAGINE -- the Princess with no clothes!!!). When I finally got everything sorted and put together some different things (did you realize if you put leggings with a dress that's too short, it makes a great top?? *smile*), she's got plenty to last her until spring. I also got into the attic and dug through the tubs up there and found the last tub of clothes I bought while we were waiting and the things others have given to us. Can you believe we are down to one tub of clothes left? Say it isn't so!!! She has a lot of stuff to get her through this summer and I found a few more outfits to get her through until summer, so we are good.

SPEAKING OF CONSIGNMENT, check out the Encores and More North website. My all-time favorite consignment sale is coming pretty soon. If you want to participate and get your clothes sold and out of the way to make room for new ones, get your consignor number NOW and start pricing.

Tomorrow, I'm tackling Joshua's room. It scares me. Honestly. I'm doing it while he's at school so he won't offer to "help" and then leave, thus just making me mad, and then come back half way through, dig through it all in the spirit of "helping" and then leave again with a bigger mess. I work better alone. *smile* He wants to redo his room this summer and I suspect it's about time. He needs a closet organizer and we need to paint. He's spending more and more time there. I remember wanting to be alone more at that age. I have to respect that wish of his so I want to help him make his room a comfy place that he will like.

And, the last thing that seems to be taking a bit more of my time is Kevin's job. Seems ironic to say that, doesn't it? Well, as many of you know, Kevin took a job in Tullahoma which is an hour and a half drive (three hours roundtrip). Because he spends a lot of time driving and usually doesn't get home until later, I'm spending more time doing things with/for the kids, cooking dinner, cleaning the kitchen, laundry, etc. that he used to help out with. This, in turn, has made me a bit more tired, so I tend to head to bed earlier knowing we have to get up earlier these days to get it all done on time. That was the time I used to blog.

So, all in all, there just have been a myriad of reasons that I haven't blogged -- none of which have been that I was sick or that anything was wrong.

I'll do a double post today and post a few pictures I've taken during the month of January. I haven't done much of that either.

Pinky promises that I will do better.

Tutu Cute

Ellie runs about two months behind her friend "Hotdog" in pretty much all areas. It shouldn't have surprised me that almost two months to the date after her mom posted this picture:

Ellie became all enthralled with her tutu. She put it on today with her Elmo pajama top and flitted around for several hours. It was sweet -- and funny!

In other news, the KY Wildcats won their ballgame today. I'm certain it was because Kevin was wearing his (really Josh's but Kevin seems to have take possession of them) "lucky" Wildcats shoes.

Josh has spent some more time sledding today. As my friend Michelle said, "Who knew it would take three days to get the 1" of snow they predicted?" It has finally stopped snowing and we might have accumulated 1" total, but it certainly didn't stop those boys from playing in it for hours every day. I'm embarrassed to say we haven't even taken Ellie out in it. The temperatures are just frigid. Maybe tomorrow after church we'll venture out with her if there is still some white stuff left to play in.

Tonight when I was putting Ellie to sleep I noticed she kept saying something that sounded like, "Dooaa, dooaa, dooaa" and wiggling around. I finally realized she was trying to sing the Dora the Explorer song!!! She's really into Dora with her Dora pjs, Dora blanket and singing her Dora theme song. Funny!! She also has to know where everything and everyone is before she goes to sleep, but she does it the funniest way. She'll sign "daddy" and throw her hands out and say, "Go???" I'll tell her that Daddy is downstairs and she'll say, "Oh." Then we go through, "Bubba", "Kitty" and "Doggy" always with the same, "Oh" said very matter-of-factly after each one. Then she has to kiss every single doll and stuffed animal in the bed (but won't kiss us -- why???) before she can go to bed.

Ellie

While the boys were outside playing in the snow, Ellie and I played inside, taking some photos.

I love how Ellie lays on the floor with her legs crossed over her back. Do girls just know to do this?

This is Ellie signing "Daddy".

Ellie has just started making this "Shhhhhh...." sound.

Ellie has figured out how to push a step stool over to the TV, get a DVD and ask us to put it in for her.

Isn't this a sweet little face?

Playing peek-a-boo:

And I LOVE this picture of her, even though she had pulled her hairbow out and had "funky" hair. Her smile is priceless:

Snow Play

We had our first official snow of the year yesterday. While the original forecast called for 2-4", we ended up with something resembling 1/2". Schools were closed for two days. Got to love the South. I know all my Northern friends are laughing right now.

We had to get Josh a new sled because his from last year (a blow up one) was popped. For anyone interested, the only place in Nashville you can find a sled is ACE Hardware (Ace is the place with the helpful hardware man -- think of that every time, great marketing song).

There's a ton of kids one street over and I took Josh over to play. Eventually, they wore the snow out there, I guess because they ended back up over here on our road. Since I cannot stand being cold lately, I took pictures from either inside the house or quickly stepping out on the front porch so the quality isn't great. This is what our neighbors were doing -- can you say redneck snow play??? Of course, I'd say that to him too and we'd get a big laugh, so I'm certainly not offending him!!! Note, he's even on the phone while he was driving the mower/grader/sled ski.

Later last night (after dark), all the kids met up again (with some parents present for supervision) and did what they called "night sledding". It was so cold, but they had fun sledding for about an hour.

Josh is up and getting ready already this morning. They are certainly making good use of their 1/2" of snow. As one kid told me yesterday, "We don't get it often, so we got to play hard!" I don't know how in the world they keep from getting frostbitten.

And, then, there's the dumb dog who thinks it's great fun to lay on the frozen pool. Lord help us if the ice cracks and he falls through.
